Description and Details
We are delighted to have acquired and offer this rare English Edwardian solid silver tea caddy made by Mappin & Webb in London, 1902.
This tea caddy features a highly collectable decoration referred to as the "Cellini" pattern which is a reference and honour to Benvenuto Cellini who was a 16th Century Italian goldsmith, sculptor and artist whose works are held in the highest regards.
As a homage to Cellini's works, though scarce, some examples of English silverware present such designs and decorations, typically on wine jugs.
We have been very fortunate to acquire and offer such an example of "Cellini" design on a unique and rare article - a tea caddy .
Being made by Mappin & Webb, the quality of the caddy is very fine yet sturdy and bold. The decoration encompasses the entirety of the sides with rich and highly embossed embellishments or foliate, floral and figural motifs.
The tea caddy is of substantial size and allows for multiple uses from storing tea, sugar, small objects to any creative choices one may wish to use this caddy for.
The caddy is hallmarked on the side (embedded within decoration) and on the interior of the lid.
An excellent collectable piece of English silverware with a distinct and iconic style to be desired for. Ideal for collections with other Cellini pieces or as a practical piece of silverware to embellish your dining table/home interior.
