Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this stylish Imperial Russian silver snuff/vesta combination case made in St Petersburg c.1900 possibly by Nichols & Plinke (hallmarks are difficult to make out but could be NP).The box is finished with a mirror-shine exterior with a gold & sapphire cabochon thumbpiece on the lid to accentuate the overall design.
Uniquely, this box features not only a snuff compartment but a small vesta (matches) case on the left with a separate lid and striker design. The case is made very well with a snug closure of the lid. The interior of the main compartment is gilt, contrasting the exterior look and adding a layer of protection from the silver tarnishing with the contents inside. The case is an ideal size both for collection and on the go. In the modern-day, it could be used for more than just the intended snuff by adding pills, mints, etc.
The case is marked on both sides with the maker's mark, "84" and the crossed anchors mark signifying St Petersburg.
