Description and Details
This is an Imperial Russian solid silver egg box with a gilt interior crafted by silversmith Ivan Sveshnikov (Иван Свешников) in Moscow c.1882. Unlike counterpart Imperial Russian silver eggs (such as egg cups), this piece features a hinge and a side-ways opening, a design which closely resembles a pill/snuff box.
The exterior is constructed from standard Russian 875 silver (84 Zolotnik Marked) and features a polished finish with an exquisite dotted pattern. Contrastingly, the interior is gilded with a bright gold plate and despite its age, it is in excellent condition. The hinge and closure function smoothly however, there is a very slight gap upon closure (please refer to photos). The egg is fully hallmarked on both sides with the maker's mark "ИАС" and the 84 Zolotnik mark accompanied by the Moscow town mark.
This Imperial Russian Egg is undoubtedly a unique and captivating collector's piece for those looking to add to their bespoke Russian silver/antique collection.
