Description and Details
This English snuff box was made by silversmith Jesse Parkes in Birmingham, 1811 - the year the firm was officially registered. The box is made from sterling silver and in terms of geometric proportions, it features a unique round-edge rectangular shape and a top-hinged lid. The design presents an iconic Georgian design with engine turned reeded lines on both the lid and base in addition to an unmonogrammed centre-piece on the lid.
In contrast to the modest exterior, the interior has been fully gilded and has a mirror-like glossy finish which further highlights the exquisite design and curvature of the sides. The snuff box has a full set of hallmarks on the lid, the maker's mark "JP", silver lion, Georgian head, Birmingham anchor and the date mark "n" for 1811.
Despite the snuff box being over 200 years old, the condition is excellent. The construction quality and feel in hand are second to none, a reflection of the meticulous Birmingham silver standards and precision of the Georgian era. In hand, the box has a very sturdy and secure feel and the curvature of the sides make for a seamless fit in the hand. The hinge and closure function flawlessly with a smooth yet precise fit upon closing the lid.
A wonderful collector's piece presenting an array of unique, intricate and captivating features whether be it for personal use or as an addition to a bespoke antique collection.
