Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this rare and large solid silver Victorian tankard made by Daniel & Charles Houle in London, 1865.Upon first glance, the impressive size and glamorous pineapple design of the tankard leaves a lasting impression.
Although it is a challenge to convey solely through photos, this tankard towers over any regular sized tankards and yet does not sacrifice finesse, detailing and the overall craftsmanship of the piece. The motif is highly embossed with fine stippling and hand engravings, forming an enchanting tesselation of diamond shapes.Despite the a slightly widened base and cylindrical shape of the tankard, the geometric pattern has been carefully thought out and embellished by a silversmith resulting in a perfect alignment. In hand, the tankard is sturdy and provides a reassuring feel despite its large stature. The widened base provides stability even when filled to the top.
The interior is fully gilt with a rich gold tone, contrasting the exterior and adding a layer of protection for the silver that can tarnish over time with the contents held within. This tankard would most definitely grace a fine antique dining table or as part of a luxurious interior display, however, it may also be used practically due to its excellent condition and leak-free state. Additionally, due to its very accommodating size, why not get creative and experiment with contemporary ideas such as a flower vase or even a centrepiece attraction bound to be a conversation starter.
The tankard is fully hallmarked with English marks on the side near the handle.
