Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this magnificently large and decorative solid silver Victorian tray/salver made by the celebrated maker Hunt & Roskell of London in 1850.
Hunt & Roskell was a premier silversmith/jeweller with their wares featuring the most desirable, fine and meticulous designs and as a result, held the Royal Warrant of Queen Victoria for many years.
This firm was established as the successor by the renowned silversmith Paul Storr who had left Rundell, Bridge & Rundell in order to start his own workshop on Harrison Street near Clerkenwell in 1819.
Due to an eventual and evolving partnership with none less than John Mortimer, John Samuel Hunt, Robert Roskell Jn. the name came to be altered multiple times with the name Hunt & Roskell being hallmarked and stamped on this salver.
Upon first glance, one may be enamoured by its large yet elegant aesthetics, with the salver featuring an array of charming ornamentations.
The cast-silver border of the edge presents scrolled and intertwined acanthus leaves with multiple cutouts to highlight the richness of the decoration.
Further towards the centre, the salver has a spectacular hand-engraved wreath of further foliate and floral motifs.
The salver is supported by four cast-silver feet with a pierced and foliate design that matches the overall decorations.
A full set of clear English hallmarks are present on the reverse side in addition to the Hunt & Roskell signed mark.
The very large size (47cm from edge to edge & 2.9kg), allows for this salver to be an exemplary piece of fine Victorian silverware made by one of the greatest firms - a perfect addition for uncompromising display or as an Haute-silverware interior decor whether be it for usage with consumables or as a centrepiece with tea sets etc on top.
