Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this unique and monumental solid silver Georgian cup/goblet/trophy made by Solomon Hougham in London, 1812.
The goblet features a widened foot connecting to the large flared upper cup via a waisted midsection.
On each end, a cast-silver hippocampus (Roman/Greek mythological sea-horse) handle is present with very detailed and intricate engraving of the mane, facial features and individual scales.
Interior-wise, the goblet is fully gilt which has a yellow gold-tone with a delightful contrast to the exterior silver. This not only serves an aesthetic purpose but protects the silver from tarnishing with whatever may be held within.
The goblet features two unique and historic hand engravings: on one side, the coat of arms for the "Ipswich Loyal Volunteers" is present and the other side displays a presentation message that reads as follows: "Presented by the non-commissioned Officers & Privates of the Ipswich Loyal Volunteers to Simon Jackaman ESQR Lieut. Col. Commandant - March 24th 1813".
The goblet was made and presented to a military Lieutenant Colonel during the period of the renowned Napoleonic Wars - a series of significant conflicts that took place from the 18th May 1803 - 20th November 1815.
In addition to its historic interest, such items of silverware may be used for a range of purposes such as a drinking vessel, antique interior-ware, flower vase, or any further creative ideas one may compose.
There are no leaks in this cup and thus liquids can be held within.
A full set of English hallmarks are marked on the side of the cup.
Overall a superb, cup/goblet/trophy with a dazzling gold shine, ideal for uncompromising collectors, interior decorations and for practical usage.
