Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this magnificent solid silver gilt charger/sideboard dish made in the mid-late 19th century.
Impressive in size and presence, this dish is certainly an eye-catching and ornate piece of silverware - whether be it in an antique setting or as a juxtaposing piece in a contemporary setting, this dish would serve as a historic and opulent centrepiece.
The dish features a raised border with a hand-chased wreath of various fruit and foliate motifs. Centrally, a figural battle scene is finely chased and engraved with great detail and meticulousness. The scene depicts the battle of Carravagio (15 September 1448) - Venetian commanders Ermolao Donato and Gerardo Dandolo refuse to save themselves against Francesco Sforza.
The detail of the soldier's armour and the height of the relief is a testament to its quality chasing work and creates a wonderful contrast and three-dimensional effect separated from its background. Furthermore, with the front side of the dish being fully gilded (gold on top of solid silver), it makes a bold and majestic impression to the viewer whether be it to the untrained eye or a seasoned silver enthusiast.
Whilst splendid as a display centrepiece or on a sideboard, owing to its generous proportions and shape, it could also be used practically, almost in a salver-like fashion with a touch of creativity: fruit, bread or canapés etc. Additionally, its gilding will serve as a layer of protection to prevent the dish from tarnishing with the content placed on top.
Six hallmarks are present on the edge of the dish which are of Hanau origin.
