Description and Details 

We are delighted to offer this remarkable large Georgian solid silver table snuff box with the marks of John Reily, London 1824.Whilst it is challenging to convey the true size and weight in hand through photographs, this box is of very impressive size and exuberates classical Georgian style with an additional flair of grandeur.In addition to its very large size, what is perhaps most desirable and unique about this box is how uncommon it is to find table snuff boxes of this design and proportion. Typically, large table snuff boxes tend to be more square and adorned with an almost endless array of decorations, however, this box is quite the contrary.

Featuring an oval/oblong shape with fewer ornamentations in an understated classical manner, it is precisely the lack of extra embellishments that allows for its size to be the highlight of this piece and stand out from the rest. It is almost akin to smaller/compact Georgian pocket snuff boxes, yet the oversized proportions effectively juxtapose such modest designs of reeded lines. Once picked up in hand, it becomes immediately evident that the quality, weight and craftsmanship that has gone into this snuff box is anything but modest and it has a magnificent feel in hand. 

In spite of its large size, the intricacy and minute details have not been overlooked. The thumbpiece of the box features a wonderfully ornate floral design with finely chased details remaining very crisp. The interior of the snuff box is equally marvellous with an additional fully gilt surface with a beautiful gold tone. The layer of gold not only serves an aesthetic purpose but also prevents the contents inside from tarnishing the silver.Whilst this box would undoubtedly make a fine addition to a snuff box collection, in the modern day, such boxes could also be used to store small items, mints and pills in addition to the traditional snuff (tobacco) that would have been stored within. 

A full set of English hallmarks is present on the interior lid/base of the box.

Condition

Great Condition -  The snuff box is in great antique condition with no major issues. Some slight surface scratches, nicks and wear are present as expected with age. Otherwise, the box remains in very good order with a perfect hinge, closure and crisp reede lines. 

We aim to overemphasize and state these issues to avoid disappointment and thus please rest assured they are not significant nor affect the usage of the items.
